What Shopify Customer Support Actually Costs (And What a Chatbot Saves)

If you run a Shopify store and handle customer support yourself, you probably have a rough sense of how time-consuming it is. If you have a part-time or full-time hire for it, you have an invoice. Either way, most store owners underestimate the actual number.

Here is what the math looks like, and where an AI chatbot changes it.

The typical support cost for a Shopify store

Support costs show up in a few places:

Staff time. An in-house support person costs $35,000 to $50,000 a year in salary in the US, plus payroll taxes and benefits. At 40 hours a week, that works out to roughly $17 to $25 per hour of their time.

Ticket volume. A Shopify store doing $300K to $1M in annual revenue typically handles 200 to 600 support tickets a month, depending on the category. Apparel, home goods, and supplement brands run toward the high end because of returns and sizing questions. Simpler product categories run lower.

Time per ticket. Most support tickets take 4 to 8 minutes to handle: reading, looking up the order or policy, writing a response. Call it 6 minutes on average.

Do the arithmetic: 400 tickets a month at 6 minutes each is 40 hours of support time. At $20 per hour fully loaded, that is $800 per month in labor, just for support.

For larger stores, the numbers scale up fast. A store handling 1,500 tickets a month is looking at 150 hours and $3,000 or more in monthly support cost.

The problem: most of those tickets are the same question

The reason support costs are predictable is that the questions are predictable. In most Shopify stores, 60 to 75 percent of incoming tickets fall into a handful of categories:

  • Where is my order?
  • What is your return policy?
  • How do I exchange an item?
  • Does this run true to size?
  • Do you ship to [country]?

These are questions with answers that already exist in your store. The customers just did not find them, or they want confirmation from a real interaction. Either way, the answer does not require judgment. It requires lookup.

What an AI chatbot changes

A chatbot trained on your Shopify store handles the predictable tier automatically. Order status queries connect to your order data and return a real-time status. Return policy questions pull your actual policy. Sizing questions read your product descriptions. Shipping questions check your actual shipping zones.

The questions that require judgment, like a disputed charge or an unusual situation, still go to your team. The chatbot handles volume. Your team handles exceptions.

These numbers assume a store in the 300 to 600 ticket per month range. For a larger operation, the labor cost is proportionally higher. The chatbot cost does not change.

The savings are not theoretical. A chatbot that deflects 65 percent of incoming tickets on a 400-ticket-a-month store is eliminating about 26 hours of support work. At $20 per hour, that is $520 per month in recaptured labor, from a tool that costs $200.

What the first month looks like

The setup process takes about two weeks. Training pulls from your product catalog, return policy, shipping rules, FAQ, and any support ticket examples you can share. The chatbot is tested before going live so it does not confidently answer questions incorrectly from day one.

The first month usually surfaces a few gaps: a product detail that was not captured, a policy line that needs adding. That is expected and covered by the maintenance fee. By month two, most stores see the chatbot handling the bulk of their predictable volume without intervention.
